What is a credit union?

The members of a credit union are its owners who put their own money to run it. Credit unions are community-based financial cooperatives that are owned and controlled by members who are also shareholders. Credit Unions are mutual, co-operative societies which are governed by a volunteer Board of directors elected each year from the membership.

A Credit Union is a co-operative institution and as such it is able to set its own interest rates. By offering a more financially attractive alternative to the standard products offered by banks, the popularity of the credit union movement in the UK is increasing. But now, whatever holds together a credit union can be something less defined, a geographic region or social ties, for instance.

Although each credit union must ensure that enough money is set aside to ensure financial stability, all other profits are used to provide the lowest interest rates for members’ loans whilst returning an attractive rate of interest for its savers. The savings can be significant. The savings can be significant.

Credit Unions Offer Plenty of Financial Services While credit unions obviously offer accounts to save and check with, one of the biggest reasons to join are low cost loans. All money management options of the Navy Federal Credit Union come with a free Visa Check Card with worldwide ATM access, free and unlimited access to Navy Federal ATMs, 24/7 online account access via the Navy Federal Credit Union Website, unlimited and free transactions through over 20,000 CO-OP Network ATMs and a variety of options. This comes as a strong point in favor of the credit unions. But how do you decide which credit union is the best for you?

Furthermore, dividend payments to savers and the credit union’s operating costs have to be met out of the credit union’s profits, so a strong fund is essential for the credit union's success.

In order to operate, a credit union must be successful in attracting a sufficiently large amount of savers to enable it to hold sufficient liquidity to enable it to meet members' requests for loans, share withdrawals and overheads. All members of the Navy Federal Credit Union can make loan payments, order checks, open certificates, apply for various loans, request stop payments, send e-messages and transfer money from other Navy Federal accounts. Being a member of the Navy Federal Credit Union can save you hundreds of dollars.
