What is a credit union?
Credit unions sole purpose is to serve their member-owners. If you've been feeling like small potatoes at your bank lately, it's probably time to start looking at a credit union instead. Credit unions are community-based financial cooperatives that are owned and controlled by members who are also shareholders.
The profit made by a credit union is distributed among its members in the form of interest or dividend. Hidden fees and transaction charges are non-existent with a credit union loan. While it's certainly convenient to approach the bank for a loan, the process of applying for finance can be a rocky road and, at the end of it all, you might find that your income isn't enough to finance the repayments.
Whether you have a poor credit rating or not you can still become a member of a credit union and save as little or as much as you like. If a family or household member is eligible to join a credit union you may be eligible to join because of your relationship. If you are part of a labor union, chances are the union has a credit union that allows all union members and their families to join.
This is done through the lower loan rates, fewer fees, added or improved services and so on. There are still a number of smaller credit unions in existence so be sure to ask about the services offered before you join. Interest payments for some loans from credit unions are tax deductible. It allows you to make loan transfers and payments via Federal ATMs. However, bear in mind that if you can't find a deal to suit, or if the bank says 'no' it might be worthwhile having a chat with your local credit union - they might say 'yes'.

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of getting a car loan from a lender and a credit union. All members of the Navy Federal Credit Union can make loan payments, order checks, open certificates, apply for various loans, request stop payments, send e-messages and transfer money from other Navy Federal accounts. Are any of the credit union locations close to your home? Work? On the way? Are there ATMs within walking distance? What are their hours of operation?
