How to Find a Credit Union
The members of a credit union are its owners who put their own money to run it. If you belong to a labor union or are affiliated with a large employer, organization or residential community you might be interested in joining a credit union. The popularity of credit unions grew and in the year 1934, there was a genuine need to give different credit unions an industry status.
A given credit union cannot lend all the money saved as loans to its members and cannot invest any residual money in any ventures above a certain level of risk. A smart consumer can keep more money in their pocket by using a credit union versus a bank. The membership of the Navy Federal Credit Union is limited to all Navy personnel including active duty marine and navy, reservists, civilian employees, retired or annuitant.
Many credit unions also pay 'bonus' dividends in especially good years. If you are part of a labor union, chances are the union has a credit union that allows all union members and their families to join. Even if you need money for your business you still need to borrow money in the manner of a standard member of the credit union.
Interest Rates are often better at credit unions compared to banks. You can manage your money from share savings to your checking account. Michigan's largest independent savings bank, with reported assets of $13 billion, is a member of a credit union league. You can look up credit unions in your area that you might be able to join. All you have to do is prove that you can save before any loan will be offered but once proven, financial assistance will be offered based on how much you can save or tailored to your individual circumstances.
There is really no way to gauge service than by either contacting the credit union, or walking in the door.
